<pre wrap="">This is it. The annual BEST day for APRS every year with tens of
thousands of mobile hams all headed in one direction, to Dayton Ohio.
There is nothing better for the mobile operator than APRS for keeping
aware of what is around you while traveling. Just be sure to enable
Voice Alert (means setting CTCSS 100 on your APRS channel) so you can
be called by any nearby mobile in simplex range (no matter what your
other radios are tuend to) by calling you by voice and suggesting a
QSY.
While monitoring 144.39 with CTCSS 100 you will also automatically be
alerted to any other Ham in simplex range by a once a minute Voice
Alert beep. Nice to know when someone is nearby.
The easy way to set up APRS is by setting 4 channels in your radio.
1) 144.39 CTCSS 100 - normal operations with Voice Alert
2) 144.39 no tone - for monitoring the channel by ear for troubleshooting
3) 144.39 CTCSS XXX - called APRS mute. Select this so that not even
Voice Alert tones will be heard. Choose an XXX that is your own
private Tone so that only your inner circle can still call you
4) 144.39 +600 - half duplex for special events where there are
144.99/144.39 temporary digis
5) 144.99 -600 - half duplex for when YOUR mobile is parked at a
special event and SERVING as a special half-duplex digi
By setting these 5 channels, then you can change your APRS operation
as simply as changing channels (without ever touching the volume
control knob on that side of your radio!). But channel 1 is your
normal operating mode.. If you want to mute Voice alert, do NOT turn
down the audio, just go to channel 3. If you turn down the volume,
then you may forget when you go back to Voice Alert (channel 1) and
none of us like to hear Voice Alerts from stations
*that*are*not*listening!
Thanks
Bob, WB4APR
