Here in Upstate NY the digis tend to be found mostly around cities, with the occasional ham running one out in the boonies.
I run WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 locally, and WIDE2-2 when I'll be driving out where I know the coverage is sparse.
Running WIDE1-1 only seems too short, at least to me, and I'm considering Upstate NY as "out east".
WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 or WIDE2-2 both yield two digipeater hops.

However using only WIDE2-2 rules out using any local home fill-in
digipeaters that might be in the area. Low-level home digis ONLY
respond to WIDE1-1. On the other hand, true wide-area digis respond
to either WIDE1-1 or WIDE2-n.

The WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 path is universal -- it will take advantage of
any low-level fill-ins that might be present, but both hops can be
processed by "big" digis if no fill-ins are present.

A straight WIDE2-2 will be processed ONLY by high-elevation true
wide-area digipeaters. You are NOT going to "get out" any better by
forfeiting the possible help of a fill-in digi.
