Interesting question. In APRS mode, the Kenwoods pass the messages in TNC command-mode format to the serial port (terminated by carriage return and line feed), so a binary non-APRS message might be really garbled (I haven't looked at the command-mode output of a TNC2 receiving non-APRS traffic in a while); I'll have to try that.

If you override the archaic 7-E-1 default serial port format of a
TNC2 (even today new hardware TNCs like KPC3+ and PK-232s STILL
default to 7-E-1 out of the box!) and set it to 8-N-1, set "AWLEN"
to 8, set "8BIT" to ON, and set X-on/X-off software flow control
(usually XFLOW or FLow depending on firmware syntax) to OFF, you
can pass binary data and 8-bit extended ASCII characters with no
problem.
[For the last decade or so, I have used a modified version of the
final TAPR TNC2 firmware release (1.1.9) tweaked to DEFAULT to
8-bit transparent mode in all my TNC2s and clones such as MFJ-127x.]
As far as the Kenwoods go, the earlier D700 and TH-D7 pass NOTHING
out the serial port when in "APRS" mode.

The later D710 and TH-D72 have a rudimentary monitor-only mode out
the virtual (serial-over-USB) com port while in "APRS" mode. This
is NOT full bidirectional access to the TNC as it is in "TNC" mode.
I don't know how transparent it is to non-text characters though.
