<pre wrap="">The current K6RPT-12 balloon track is a dramatic demonstration of collisions
in areas with a lot of out-of-area APRS RF activity.
I see a constant string of successive fixes K6RPT-12 on the Internet feed, but
only about one out of every two or three on the RF display as it crosses
Michigan within about 40 miles of me.
1) The balloon's transmitter is a fractional-watt tracker device.
2) There is not much activity local to me (i.e. direct or one hop via the
LOCAL Lansing, Mich area digipeater.
3) The south-east Michigan "CHLSEA" digipeater is on relatively high ground
(by midwestern/Michigan standards!) about 40 miles west of downtown Detroit and
about 40 miles southeast of me It booms into the Lansing, MI area with a
steady steam of first or second-hop digipeats from the relatively high level of
activity in the metro Detroit, MI/Windsor, Ontario area about 75 miles away.
3) As a result, one or two out of every three beacons from the balloon
results in a collision that CHLSEA always wins, resulting in a much sparser
track than I see from the APRS-IS.
