This doesn't behave like the typical USB<-->serial
dongle? I.e. the entry for this in the control panel doesn't
have an option to force a COM number?<br>

If this thing behaves at all like serial dongles: <br>
<br>
- Locate the device in the Windows Device Manager, usually
under "Ports (COM and LPT)" but possibly under "Bluetooth
Radios".<br>
<br>
- Double-click the item and choose "Port Settings" on the
resulting dialog. <br>
<br>
- Ignore all the stuff about baud rate, parity, etc (your
application will override whatever is here), and click the
"Advanced" button. <br>
<br>
- There should be a pull-down list box for "Com Port
Number". <br>
<br>

fiddling with these types of devices often requires returning to
the Windows Control Panel repeatedly to make or check
settings. Put one-double-click access to the Device Manager
on your desktop. <br>
<br>
- Right-click the desktop and choose "New, Shortcut". <br>
<br>
- Enter devmgmt.msc as the "location of the item:".<br>
<br>
- On the next screen, enter "Device Manager" as the label
and OK it.<br>
<br>
- You will now have much more convenient access when
fiddling with USB gizmos. <br>

If you fiddle with sound card devices and apps a lot, a similar
short cut can give you direct access to the Windows Sound Input
(i.e. record) Mixer used for receive on soundcard apps.
Normally this is a pain to get at since you have to open the
playback (i.e. output) mixer used for soundcard transmit first,
and then go through numerous additional clicks to get to the
input side. <br>

Create a shortcut like above, but point it to "sndvol32.exe
/rec" (without the quotes) and label it Input Mixer . <br>
