What is the purpose of APRS on HF? Most of what I have read about APRS
has said that the purpose of APRS is to provide *local* information.
In another thread someone has said that if you can't reliably reach
someone more than two hops away use packet, which implies that APRS
isn't meant for long distance messaging either.

Just wanted to clarify, my passionate rant is focused on VHF (144.390) operations in the USA, where there is a lot of activity. There are many special cases, from aircraft to balloons to I-S.S. and the Golden Packet event that have different purposes and methods, all using APRS. There is no one goal, other than for people to communicate.
