Ha, Success! It can use some tweeking on both sides (the D7 and the gateway), but the message was received, and the phone did NOT reboot.

From the D7 I sent a message with "message subject" as the subject, and one line of text "Message text", followed by a message with the /EX terminator. What she got was:

"Message received Message
text**************************************************** This message
was sent using a remote device which *** *** has limited capacity.
When replying use plain *** *** text and keep the message as short as
possible. *************************"

So, "Message text" is indeed in there, but the subject is deleted since apparently that has no equivalent in a SMS text message. The "Message received" part is from the D7 sending an automatic acknowledgment message (which I probably should turn off for this), and then there's all the extra fluff of the message length warning.

I wonder if it would be possible to add a command to the gateway (ST instead of SP, perhaps) for sending to Text message recipients, that would leave out the extra warning text (since they can't send much back either)? Or maybe end with /ET instead of /EX, if the gateway doesn't want to remember how the message started?

Would the "Winlink system administrator" be a good contact person for this suggestion?

Also, I tried sending a short message back to my D7 from a regular email program, and it also worked, but again the message length problem was very limiting. I can see the whole string on my Xastir gateway, but when it gets to the radio, I see the subject line and the sender's email address, but the text is truncated. I thought the messages were sent in pieces, so that you would see the whole thing... Did I not retrieve it correctly? (sent "r1" to the gateway from the D7). Or, is the D7 not configured right?

Thanks!

Greg KO6TH

From: ko6th_greg@hotmail.com
To: bwebster@wirelessmapping.com; aprssig@tapr.org
Date: Thu, 14 May 2009 21:17:21 -0700
Subject: Re: [aprssig] APRS Email -> Cell phone Text message problem

Hi Brian,

Ah, this one looks promising. Plain text, multiple lines (Thank you!), and I get to set both the subject and text contents. The only issue might be the message length, due to the long hunk of text warning you about the limited reply capability. (Ironic, no?).

I've got an email out to my daughter to warn her it's coming... I'll let you know.

Greg KO6TH

From: bwebster@wirelessmapping.com
To: aprssig@tapr.org
Date: Wed, 13 May 2009 08:08:26 -0400
Subject: Re: [aprssig] APRS Email -> Cell phone Text message problem

let her clear it all out and try the original email service one last time,
