It sounds like crud from my limited experience. I went to look at it
at HRO Atlanta. The store has a radio that can get into a couple of
local repeater setups but no one sounds anything close to what I would
consider "good sound" Like the P25 systems the local police are
putting up. Not ready for prime time and I don't think it ever will be.
Actually, I think the beauty of DSTAR voice is that once it is
in digital form, it can go anywhere in the world via the
infrastrcuture. Yes, we can do that via Echolink and IRLP, but
by starting off with digital voice in DSTAR, then the voice can
be shipped anywhere with no loss of quality.
And that is a great way to do what I have been trying to do with
APRS since we came up with the Automatic Voice Relay System
(AVRS) concept in the year 2000 time frame... Just identify the
callsign you want to talk to, let APRS, IRLP and ECHOLINK set up
the call.
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/avrs.html This is one of the
main reasons we need to have FREQUENCY in our APRS packets so we
can contact the end station...
DSTAR has the potential do this all directly within its system
without having to glue all these different pieces together as we
do in APRS (or so I assume).
