</head><BODY BGCOLOR="#F8F8F8" ><div><SPAN style="font-size:10pt;">WIDE1-1 is a special case of the WIDEn-N path identifier. It is recognized by the "high digi's" just like other WIDEn-N specifiers. However, it is also recognized by "fill-in digi's", typically home stations in a good spot to give mobiles a boost into a major digi. Those fill-in stations DO NOT recognize other WIDEn-N paths, only WIDE1-1. By using WIDE1-1 a mobile stands to get a repeat by a closer fixed station, but will be digipeated by a regular digi, too, if it hears it direct. If you are familiar with the old RELAY, WIDE path -- WIDE1-1 functionally replaces RELAY.</SPAN></div>

<div><SPAN style="font-size:10pt;">WIDE1-1 should only be used by mobiles. WIDE1-1 is used only in the first position of the path. WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 says "any digi please repeat me if you hear me direct, after that only major digi's repeat me one more time". In that case the "2" of WIDE2-1 does have significance since it effectively limits who will do the remaining repeat(s).</SPAN></div>

<div><SPAN style="font-size:10pt;">I don't think anyone has mentioned that another feature of the WIDEn-N path is that duplicates are suppressed. A digi knows if it has already repeated a particular packet and will not repeat it again. That prevents two digis from ping-ponging a packet back and forth.<br />--</SPAN></div>
