Radio High Altitude Ballooning uses lightweight balloon-borne payloads which
are tracked by radio, recovered and then reused on future flights. Payloads
usually contain GPS receivers and report position to ground stations using
Amateur Radio’s APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System). Payloads can
also include cameras, scientific instruments, and radio equipment for
communications experiments. Many ballooning groups fly student-designed experiments
as part of their missions.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

frequently achieve near-space altitudes of 80,000 feet or higher, endure very
cold temperatures (often lower than -70°F) and atmospheric pressure less than
1% of that at the earth's surface. Flight distance can vary from a few to
several hundred miles depending on winds aloft, and the flight’s path is
predicted before launch. Amateur Radio High Altitude Balloon flights in the <st1:country-region
