Vara HF and Vara FM are widely used in the U.S. for RF access to the 
Winlink messaging system.

Vara HF is gaining popularity for use with VarAC, keyboard-to-keyboard 
communications client, and with various clients for APRS position 
reporting on HF.

I don't think "closed modes" are frowned upon in the U.S.
