That web site makes my eyes hurt.

About 5 years ago Google changed from a free model to one that gives you 
some free service and then gets expensive, and started requiring that you 
have an API key so that they could control access. He probably just never 
put the key in, so all mapping stopped working.

I think shutting it off would be more a service than leaving it abandoned 
and broken. You can look at it in the Internet Archive forevermore if you 
want.
