VARA is a relatively new soundcard-based  "digi-mode". it is essentially a
software-based modem or "TNC" that can work reliably at extremely low
signal-to-noise ratios. With a strong signal, it can achieve speeds exceeding
1200 baud packet in a 500 Hz CW bandwidth on HF/SSB.   VARA is only a modem -
some application software with an IP or KISS link like a messaging app or email
needs to run on top of it.

Some details on VARA and how to mate it with APRS applications is here on my
website:

<http://WA8LMF.net/VARAforAPRS>    Shows using APRS clients with VARA as a
vastly superior means of HF APRS beaconing.
