I assume you also called CQ?

To make a mobile-to-mobile contact on "52" one has to call CQ at least every
2 minutes.  That should let them raise anyone within about 4 miles.
Otherwise it is ships passing in the night.

If everyone only calls CQ once every 5 minutes, then stations can be more 5
miles or more apart and not really hear each other at all even though they
passed within 100 feet of each other.

That is why Voice Alert works so well for APRS operators anyway.  They are
transmitting every minute and cannot miss each other as long as the volume
is up.

Of course one can maybe call CQ less frequently as long as they make a point
to always call they are on top of a hill.  But then they have a 50/50 chance
that the guy that hears him is on the wrong side of the hill as they are
going and they only get that single transmission...

So anway. If no one is transmitting then no one is going to make any
contacts...

I monitored 146.52 for most of the trip but 2m FM voice just seems like
Newton Minnow's "vast wasteland".
