The lack of an access point isn't the problem - the WiFi modules I'm 
using will act as their own AP.  The problem is mobile devices not being 
able to readily connect to both the isolated WiFi capable device and to 
another AP providing Internet service.  If the other AP is always there, 
you can connect the WiFi device through the AP. If you've got a tracker 
in your car that's providing WiFi-based messaging, though, you could 
have trouble pulling in to your driveway and using that and your home 
WiFi at the same time.
