I have spoken with hydrologist from the NWS on this topic in the past. To make the data more valuable to them it would be best to place these devices in locations where they have other historical data. This can be where there are or have been the visual stream gauge/level sticks/posts or other measurement stations. The reason he mentioned this is so that they can use this new data against their modeling software.

 

If we were to place devices like this, when possible it would be good to have them at known elevation locations. Bridges with benchmarks or that have been surveyed for good elevation values are good candidates. That really helps the hydrologists when they know the true elevation of the water levels.

FEMA (who have been heavly deployed to Louisanna for the past month) is really, really interested in live flood data....  They asked what can APRS do...

Well, Im working on a design, but anyone else is welcome to come up with one too.  I want to tie an ON/OFF float switch to turn on a Tracker when the water reaches an "interest" level and then report actual water height every 10 minutes while above that level.  The tracker sends the data and colors the icon green, yellow , red...

If the design is suitable, we can purchase a bunch of the sensors and then let TAPR or someone distribute them so people can build these gauges and we can show FEMA what we can do!
