Bob,
XASTIR runs just fine on a Pi 2 or 3.  I have a 2 running XASTIR, with a TNC-Pi (TNC-X variant that plugs right into the Pi) running in my rack at home.  I just XRDP into it with Windows Remote Desktop when I want to view it or make changes.  I have it running my area objects, too.  Pretty easy and cheap to get it going.
