If you ask Bob, I did, that is the answer you get, and the look of pain on his face when someone says "ape-ers" is a thing to behold.

Unfortunately whether to pronounce initials, or spell them out, is not consistent.  You pronounce AMSAT or TAPR, but not ARRL or QCWA.  In fact, to make the point about APRS to someone, I purposely pronounce ARRL to rhyme with "Carl."
