That's not the whole story.   Digipeaters have been known as an easy
but inefficient solution from the beginning.  In the early 1990's
(before APRS?) we had high throughput solutions such as node-to-node
acks, backbones and ever true repeaters (not digipeaters).
Digipeaters still persist as the quick hack to extend the range of
packet.  Unfortunately, due to several reasons, we no longer do much
to develop Ham data solutions.

PS.  *MESH is taking somewhat the same easy-but-compromised path of
digipeaters.  There are some Ham groups using COTS microwave
technology to build modern high performance systems - see
