OOPS! I totally forgot that the mic jack on the 710 is on the chassis, not the
control head, and that the RJ on the head has a totally different pinout!

I HAVE successfully powered modern low-power low-current-drain GPS units from
the mic jack of the TM-D700 and TM-D742. I have a variation of this device

that has a RJ-45 Kenwood mic plug on a 6" pigtail on one end and a Kenwood mic
jack on the other. The box inserts in-line between the original mic and the
radio's mic jack. The TT3 and the attached GPS are powered by the DC on the
mic jack. I make a point of using a NON-illuminated mic to make enough current
available for the added hardware.
