Thanks everyone for their input.

I am still looking for a digital transmission unit which can transmit 
data in a higer modulation scheme.
I actually just found an interesting company who sells just that, but I 
assume this gear is going to be very expensive. They use OFDM on Time 
Division Multiplex 256-QAM modulation, which enables them to transmit up 
to 56Kb on a 12.5 Kc channel, but it would require a huge amount of FEC. 
I would think something like 8PSK would be more suitable for what I have 
in mind.

Anyway, its interesting stuff.
