Yes, he was lighting up quite a large geographical area:

Then KF6RFX-3:


Red lines are the first or direct hop.  Green lines are digipeated 
copies of the packets.   Rest assured that there are LOTS of green lines 
completely covered by the red lines.  And yes, the red direct links are 
really that long for a transmitter at altitude.  The direct RF footprint 
is big anywhere over 1,000 feet AGL.  That's why no path i necessary 
when flying at altitude.

The high resolution *-RF-7.png images show the balloon's actual path 
inside the red blob and lets you see more of the completely redundant 
green digipeater links at the fringe.  The larger red dots are IGates 
and the smaller red dots are digipeaters.

The following link is a dump of the raw packets received by all 
APRSISCE/32 IGates that mention KF6RFX.  This includes the BALLOON 
ANSRVR group launch detection and various DX reports from APRSISCE/32 
IGates.  The packets received per IGate can be found in the Packets 
directory of the original link.

At its peak altitude (apparently 104,038 feet), I counted 41 copies of 
the packet received by APRSISCE/32 IGates across a span of 10 seconds 
(remember, digipeated copies take time to propagate, especially on a 
busy frequency).

PS.  Note that these plots were generated from raw RF traffic as 
received directly from APRSISCE/32 IGates.  You won't see this sort of 
coverage information from the APRS-IS as it will show only the first 
copy of any packet received.  The RF traffic represents ALL original and 
digipeated packets received by any APRSISCE/32 IGate with no duplicate 
suppression.

For comparison, here's the much less dense APRS-IS dupe-suppressed 
pictures of the two balloons. mostly IGates as the directly received 
packets are typically delivered to the APRS-IS much quicker than the 
digipeated copies which end up dupe-suppressed out of existence.
