Yeah, that is quite a wonderfulness,
http://www.aprs.org/aprs11/tocalls.txt says:

      APRXxx >40 APRSmax
      APRXxx <39 for OH2MQK's RX-igate

APRSmax is Bob's own original APRS application. I just checked the
usage statistics for the past 3 months:

aprx:

APRX1C 1
APRX1D 15
APRX1E 3
APRX1L 12
APRX1M 3
APRX20 171
APRX21 26
APRX22 106
APRX23 63
APRX24 55
APRX25 32
APRX26 275
APRX27 722
APRX28 23

APRSmax:

APRX44 1
APRX46 1
APRX76 3

And here are the 5 aprsmax users for the past 3 months:

srccall dstcall comment
N6GIW APRX46 ....dDvs
KD4QIA APRX44 Henderson Mountain
N3OZB APRX76 isobar at verizon dot net
KD4ITI APRX76 KD4ITI Home QTH
WB4APR-3 APRX76 Bobat work

I would suggest that APRXxx could be allocated completely for aprx,
and aprsmax would be allocated some other tocall if Bob is to continue
its development at some point.

It would be so much easier to specify that the tocalls either have a
specific single value (like APCLEY), or a prefix with a few characters
to specify versions (APRXxx). aprsmax is the only exception to that
rule.

Having the version digit range divert to another software is an
unnecessary complication, especially if it's only for the sake of 5
copies of aprsmax.
