Dug out some links, looked into this when I wanted to do OSGB36 to WGS84
conversion. The last link is the one that is probably most useful for what
is required

I collected a lot of information a year or so ago, and if I recall you need
the reference point and ellipsoid scale for each area.
And of course for the UK at least most maps are in our local grid system
OSGB36.
I seem to remember it's really just different reference points etc, the
actual conversion algorithm is the same

Copy me on what you learn because the last time I looked there isn't
jsut one UTM grid, but several localized versions that use different
reference points and conversion equations.
