And yes - I am using the Pi for an APRS parser into MySQL and feeding it to google earth

You'll be doing APRS on the rasberry Pi, right?
you will need a crossover ethernet cable.
I would make them different network numbers, and use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). The Wizard is pretty good.
