Are you thinking D72? I don't think a D7 will but I use my D700 as a standalone fill-in digi. Would like to use my old D7 also if possible - -

See the "Setting As A Digipeater" section of the APRS manual from
pages APRS-21 to APRS-22.
I was looking for an easy way to make
a temporary, back-country
APRS digipeater (for Search and Rescue
missions). Other alternatives I could think
of were
an old D700 or a TNC-old HT
combo. Other suggestions welcome.
Give it a better antenna than a rubber duck at reasonable HAAT and
it could definitely be an assist.
