Are you thinking D72? I don't think a D7 will but I use my D700 as a standalone fill-in digi. Would like to use my old D7 also if possible - -

      Does
            the Kenwood D7A digipeat?

    Yes.

      I couldn’t find any
references or program switches to indicate that it does, so
            I’m
            thinking “no”.

See the "Setting As A Digipeater" section of the APRS manual from
    pages APRS-21 to APRS-22.

I was looking for an easy way to make
            a temporary, back-country
APRS digipeater (for Search and Rescue
missions). Other alternatives I could think
            of were
            an old D700 or a TNC-old HT
            combo. Other suggestions welcome.

Give it a better antenna than a rubber duck at reasonable HAAT and
it could definitely be an assist.
