Actually, that situation has been resolved. A poll was held to select 
a new moderator and Mike Oliver KT2T was named by Yahoo as a 
moderator in the group in June 2013. Mike's first action was to clamp 
down on the spammers. The group has been clean of spam since then.

The fate of the APRSpoint program remains ambiguous. As you say, the 
author has apparently abandoned the program. Sad, really. Among the 
Windows APRS client programs, it is probably the most user friendly 
even with its limitations.
