Yes, but these days even there over the flatlands of the midwest and east
coast (and across other hill-less regions, including parts of Europe) more
and more APRS digipeaters are heard Direct by a local IGate station.  So,
for many VHF APRS stations today, setting a single-hop path of only WIDE1-1
routinely is enough to allow their packet radio data to reach their
"intended audience" (and their DX audience members will view that data on
the internet).
