Yeah, for the simpler cases where you don't want to really "user the network", 
just putting a file out and setting a reload timer on it, works fine.  But, if 
you want to be able to move the data source around, separate from the google map 
application, then starting with a "server" will let you hit the ground running 
for your ultimate goal.
