Actually, it could be!
Precision Mapping (both stand-alone and with UIview via the PMap server
plug-in) zooms out to display a Mercator map of the entire world. National
borders show and major cities show as point objects. If you zoom in in an
area other than the US or Canada, no additional detail shows, but
UIview/Precision Mapping WILL plot APRS symbols at the correct points anywhere
in the world on these simple outline maps.
The Precision Mapping overlay-creation draw tools (that create overlays that
now work in PMap Server for UIview) would allow you to draw in any amount of
additional detail as vector objects that will track the zoom levels. For
example, you could add the outlines of states, provinces, counties, etc.
You could draw in (or trace from an under-laid satellite image or Google map
image) roads of interest. Or capture them by actually driving them with a GPS
receiver attached to Precision Mapping. Again, these will become
smoothly-zoomable vector objects.
The ability to work with a variety of underlay images in various formats (.GIF,
.JPG, .PNG or ..BMP) means you could add screen caps of Google or Yahoo! road
maps (rather than satellite images) as underlays of the (mostly blank) main
Precision Mapping layer to add road detail you didn't draw in.
Details of a nifty map capture tool that lets you tile dozens of Google or
Yahoo map screens into huge images covering large areas is here on my website:
