If you want to use the internal TNC with an external computer or mapping GPS 
like the AVmap, it's the only choice.

The Yaesu APRS mobiles and handhelds have what I consider a seriously critical 
design oversight:   The radio's serial port only allows you to load/backup the 
radio memories and configuration.   It does NOT allow you to access the 
internal TNC data for use with external devices.   You are limited to APRS 
interaction exclusively through the front panel.
