Planning has begun for the annual APRS Golden Packet attempts along some of
the great linear cross-country trails. This will be the 3rd attempt at the
2000 mile Appalachian Trail packet message (14 hops) and the first attempt
along the Pacific Crest trail. Maybe a group will form to tackle the
Continental Divide Trail?

See: http://aprs.org/at-golden-packet.html
And http://aprs.org/pct-golden-packet.html

The objective is to attempt the longest possible APRS RF messaging links.
While also having great fun outdoors and practicing our emergency
communications techniques including setting up portable digipeaters, and
using end-to-end coordination comms with CQSRVR and Echolink and other ham
radio capabilities.

Mark your calendars. 24 July Sunday noon to 4 PM, though you better plan
ALL DAY Sunday to get to your peak and get setup. Most teams have last
minute team additions from the local Murphy who seems to tag along at the
last minute and screw everything up.

Show what you can do with ham radio..

No reason why the Europeans can't set up some really long distance hops too.
All it takes is a lot of work...
