There are times when it is necessary. The Florida Keys are an absolutely flat community that stretches for 130 miles. With no mountains or tall towers to give digis a good range long hop paths are essential. From the middle where the IGate is two hops is the absolute minimum to reach the whole community (of about 100,000 people, about half tourists). 

Software should make allowances to accommodate atypical situations, and that is what Bob REMEMBERED!
