[aprssig] D700 funny business - sometimes beeps when should transmit?

There is no change on the screen before or when it beeps. It shows APRS
TNC, 144.390, all the things you would expect. No busy, no other report
of incoming traffic on either side. I read the screen when I was parked
in the motel lot in Willits, CA. I was on hilltops most of the day
yesterday, so reporting is either really great or lousy anyway. I
haven't looked at the database to see how many times I reported in, but
it was mostly beeps when I was in the jeep, though people say they 'saw'
me on Spanish Mtn in Ukiah.

Rarely, I see ON AIR as you would expect, but it is the exception.

Off to Cahto Peak today. Thanks for your help Randy, hope the lack of
evidence is indicative of something you recognize.
I will try the folks on the Kenwood/D700 yahoo board, too. Just
remembered there is one.
