Subject: [ZLAPRS] Fillin digi experiment
For some time I've been writing an Aprs/packet program that has some novel
features, one of which is an implementation of the way I believe a fillin
digi should operate.
In the setup, user can specify up to four wide area digipeater callsigns
that are the wide area digipeaters that cover his locality.
Beacons originated by those digipeaters and by the callsigns in the Block
List are ignored.
Beacons to "WIDEN-n" from other stations are stored in buffers, together
with their expiry time which is t+15 seconds.
If the same beacon is heard being digipeated by one of the wide area
digipeaters within the 15 second period, the buffer is erased and the frame
is not digipeated. If no digipeat is heard, the frame is digipeated and the
buffer is erased so it becomes available for another frame.
The results so far are very encouraging. I'm finding that my station almost
never digipeats, because the wide digi's hear almost every beacon, but
occasionally it does digipeat when they miss a beacon or I fail to hear a
digipeat from them (not much harm done in the latter case, and certainly no
worse than a standard fillin digi).
The concept should be self-adjusting: stay mostly silent while the wide
digi(s) are operating but take over the role if they go off air. The 15
second time period has been chosen to allow a reasonable time for a digipeat
from the "big four" on the one hand, and on the other hand get my digipeat
out before a second beacon is heard from the same mobile at t+30.
