I'm using OpenAPRS on an iPhone. The iPhone 4 actually has a
GPS chip embedded in it. Still, a position based on where the IP
is registered is still pretty good when you look at the big picture.
I believe the term is "assisted GPS". If it can see the sky, it gives an
accurate position. If you are indoors, it comes up with a position based
on where you are in relation to the cell sites. At the very least, it speeds
up the initial position, and gets you close when the sky is completely
obscured - as long as you can get a cell signal - but it has a real GPS
chip embedded in it for when you can see the sky.
