I conveniently and coincidently got a consulting job that was using the modules and got my contact to buy me the Development kit with modules that do the same thing that John's do...sorry John.

What does all this have to do with recovering from the "OPENING TNC" lockup?
I've had this same lockup numerous times, especially when something crashes on
my laptop while controlling the Kenwood in "TNC" mode. (Accidentally
unplugging a USB<-->serial dongle while a program is talking to the D700 is
guaranteed to lock it up!) Even with the TNC hung, you can normally get to the
radio configuration menus.
All you have to do is wade through the D700 setup menus under
RADIO->AUX->RESET->"VFO Reset", and OK it. By choosing "VFO" reset rather
than "Memory" or "Full", you don't loose anything. The radio re-initializes to
VFO A on 144.00, VFO B on 440.00, memories untouched, and TNC off. Then just
recall a PM previously stored with your customary settings, and you're back in
business.
