Check out this code I did a while back.  The notes I wrote talk
about solving keepalive problems for sockets so there are probably
some tricks you can glean from the code.

That the version I have on my local hard drive is dated 01/22/2002,
which is newer than what's on the website.  You're welcome to that
if you need it but I doubt anything major was changed during that
interval.
