Here's another automatic position reporting system.  This one reports 
positions of small (4-5 ft) constant altitude balloons carried by the 
winds out over the Atlantic Ocean to obtain data from data sparse 
regions for hurricane research.  Each balloon carries a 100 gram GPS 
tracker that reports position, altitude and other information by 
occasionally sending 6 second packets of 32-FSK signals near 300 MHz to 
a geostationary satellite.  The repeated signal is received by a ground 
station in Maryland and sent via internet to NOAA in Boulder, CO.  More
