A lot of the 900MHz Motorola pagers use the FLEX protocol as opposed to
POCSAG.

Judging from this:

and a talk that I had with a 900MHz Motorola guy from one of the local
mailing lists in MA, the FLEX protocol requires some kind of timing done
at the transmitting site so that the receivers know when to listen.

Could you be a bit more specific about what model the pagers are?
