[aprssig] Can these radios be used to pick up AIS ?

AIS is on 161.975 and 162.025 MHz.  So you can receive it on any narrow-band
FM VHF receiver, I expect.  The problem is in interpreting the data.  You
can spring for a receiver that interprets the data for you, which will be
something around $200.  If you want to roll your own, you'll need something
like this: http://www.coaa.co.uk/shipplotterfaq.htm which requires a
computer with a sound card.
