I have a Garmin III with my D700 .. but I haven't run it for a couple of 
years now (sigh) .. but when I *did* run it I would occasionally come across 
this problem .. but it was only occasionally, not every single packet.

So it's very likely that it's some character that it doesn't like .. and, 
for you guys, it was on every packet.
