Check out the OpenMoko.  It won't be locked to any one service provider
(sure, Android is "open source".  But fat lot of good that does for the
end user if the phone won't run firmware images that lack an
authenticated digital signature from the service provider.)  It's
basically a Linux computer that makes phone calls that you can carry in
your shirt pocket or on your belt.


The device is pretty crude right now but there is a lot of active
development going on to polish it up.  And of course, without having to
break into your own device, you can ssh into it and get a shell like any
other Linux computer.  From there, your imagination and will to succeed
are your limits.
