Words can get in the way sometines.  I believe Lynn is correct, but I'd pick a nit and modify it this way:

  Each digi, in sequence, that is in the path to the IGate, that hears AND sends it on to the next digi, will add it's own ID. The digi that uses up a path designator, marks it with "*".

  Shouldn't  the "WIDE1" be "WIDE1*" - indicating it was used up...or is that stripped off to shorten the packet?

   Right.  They heard it, but the second one heard it *from* the first one as Lynn explains.  It is a sequential thing.  The other digis did not hear "him" , but heard the digipeated packet in sequence, one from another.
  Several other digis could have heard any of these packets, but they weren't in teh path to the IGate seen.

  I wouldn't call it loose.  The packet was sent to all and any APRS station in earshot.  The AP part of APT406 means that.   The T406 is the software version in use by this station and I don't know which and am too lazy to look it up in the TOCALL document.
