  The usual cause for this 'bloat' in PowerPoint is the inclusion of  
huge source images. Even though you scale and crop down your 3K by 2K  
image what gets displayed is scaled to the  800x600/1024x768 display,  
the original image gets stored in the PPT in its original form.  So if  
you do a 'montage' page with four to six images that are 480x360 each  
in the display but all started as 3Kx2K or 2Kx1.5K, you will have a  
page that takes many seconds to render and whose PPT is huge!

Since the final display is at modest resolution anyway , I take my  
images to be used, make copies of them in a separate folder and reduce  
the copies  to 1024x768. Then  the resulting PPT is reasonably sized  
and each slide renders rapidly.
