So what's to guarantee that anyone using the "K" does in fact have a KW of that capability?  It's common knowledge that a lot of  stations sending out info are doing it simply for ego purposes, having no real purpose aside that just to appear on a map to many.

Seriously, why not just forget the brand overlay entirely and make an overlay to shout that a station is "message-capable"?  There must be a "Q" signal that means that.  Use that.  

And then get that functionality on the APRS wish list, and, perhaps one day, all radios will have that ability.  It could happen.  Remember, manufacturers had a dreadful record of standardization until the mini-DIN came along.  Now most radios have them, with standard pin-outs.

  Could the value be that *SOME* radios have full featured messaging, etc. whereas other radios DO NOT....  

  i.e. if i tell you i have a Kenwood, you know (presumeably) that i can send and receive messages, etc., but if i have an Icom I cannot?  This would make the specific radio a worthwhile note, but would it be better to have a special icon for D700's, D710's, VX8's etc. that have these capabilities vs. radios that do not?  

  If i hook a TinyTrak to my V7A, i can run APRS... but that doesn't mean I can send or receive text messages....

  I'll have to disagree with the whole issue of spending any time on this. In 
  a hobby which prides itself on public service, there's no reason to 
  broadcast radio brands on APRS. It shouldn't be important to anybody 
  whether Joe Ham is using a KW, Alinco or Acme radio.

  Also, to add any overhead to the APRS network to advertise a certain brand 
  of 2 meter radio will unnecessarily burden the system.

  Our biggest concern should be that everything produced under the APRS 
  concept should work the same - even UI-View (which I use exclusively), even 
  though it seems that it wants to be treated differently than other APRS 
  clients.
