But needs an SSB transceiver ($1000) instead of the cheap if not
free low-band VHR radios that are hitting the streets...

No question that there are better ways to do it.  Problem is, in
ham radio, unless it is free or cheap, there is never much of a
following to make new great things work on a large scale.  But
if WSJT can show improvement with FM radios, then it is worth
looking into I guess.
