[aprssig] APRS Weather hops and rates

Interesting thoughts but remember APRS is not the same thing for everyone
and that is exactly the point you have been trying to make for the past
couple of weeks.

You state that one hop for you in the MD area is good for your house, I am
sure that is correct BUT...

How about someone driving through the mountains of WVA? Mobile setup, hills
and ruts along with shadows, multipath and fades while I am trying to check
out the possible snow storm up ahead ? If I am South of Roanoke wondering
what it's like in the Winchester area it's going to take a few hops.

Same can be said in some parts of Florida where you would be lucky to find a
WIDE at 150ft or more. 30-40 miles for a mobile is pushing it on a VERY good
day.

As you said APRS is not just for position, but it is also not just for
mobiles or not just for fixed stations, or chatting or weather. Let's try
not to Macro-Manage APRS, it's good to try to set some guidelines but too
may rules, too many "what if's" too many yes..sometimes.. absolutely.. maybe
not, will confuse the heck out of people both experienced and newbee alike.

Good info. How many hops do those packets take? In most areas
of the country, 40 to 80 miles is routine with one hop... And a
good home antenna (at least here in Maryland...

Agree, smart beaconing should apply to WX to. I should have
included that in my paragraph. The original APRS did that. WX
beacons were decayed just like all other packets. Changed
weather was beaconed immediately. Unchanged weather doubled
between each following transmission. (Wind direction changes
would not trigger a new start to high rate if the wind speed was
low).
