Today at DCC, kenwood announced that the new D710 control head will be sold separately too, since it can be used for APRS with any radio, not just the D710.

This stand-alone control head will contain most of the APRS function of the D710 because it only connects to the TX and RX audio of any other rig and it will still work as an APRS display and entry device. I don't think an availablility date was announced for the stand-alone unit.

Of course, it will not control the non-d710-radio and it will not implement the new automatic insertion of Band B voice freuency in every position packet nor the TUNE button which can tune the radio to any frquency included in such packets. but all other APRS functions are included.

It will make a nice stand alone APRS unit in many mobile applications that need two-way mobile APRS functions.
