The difference between "Wn,SSn" and "Wn,SSn-N" in a digi's position packets
seems very inconsequential. Few users ever set SSn-N paths at all, because
traceable WIDEn-N already does the job nicely (at least throughout North
America).

With mobiles able to set WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 and then travel anywhere _without
ever having to change_ their path, and home stations set to use 2 hops or
less in all directions (plain WIDE2-2 or less), then the added value of
every "S overlay" digi _listing_ it's SSn-N (or SSn) capability within every
one of it's position packets seems minor at best.

So far I've only heard of 2 US States, California and Pennsylvania, enabling
_other than_ their State 2-letter abbreviation for their SSn-N. 770
mile-long California has for some time been using NCAn-N and SCAn-N (for
Northern California and Southern California) though _still_ a few of our
digis need to finish their ("new paradigm") settings update. And I just
read (in Bob's message here) the new plan for all Eastern and Western
Pennsylvania digi sysops to change to EPAn-N or WPAn-N (and to list the new
capability within their position packets too). But I hadn't been aware of
any problem with VHF packets from Eastern Pennsylvania congesting the
Western Pennsylvania network or vice-versa (indicating a potentially useful
EPAn-N and WPAn-N solution). Here in California, where users often really
_could_ do our congested VHF network more good by "containing" their packets
to digis in only one half of the State, everybody simply sets plain WIDEn-N
paths anyway. Hey, it works well!
Is your VHF path already courteously set to 2 digi hops in all directions or
less routinely? WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 mobile; WIDE2-2 or less from home? FB. So
then who needs SSn-N?

As an example: The ISO 3166-2 Code for Germany, federal state Saarland
is DE-SL. Assuming that we do not want the hyphen, my suggestion is the
following: DO7VLR>APRS,DESL2-2

The equivalent code for, lets say, Arizona is: US-AZ. That would result
in: DO7VLR>APRS,USAZ2-2
